San Diego River Days 2026 Plein Air Paint Out
May 16 @ 8:30 am - 12:30 pm

To celebrate San Diego River Days 2026 with the SDRPF, we will meet at a new location this year. At 10900 Ashwood Street Lakeside, there is pedestrian crossing that links two sections of a hiking/equestrian trail.
For an 8:30AM start, park on the east bound side of Ashwood Street, just east of the pedestrian crossing (10900 Ashwood Street., Lakeside CA). Parking is free. The road is quite busy, but there is room to pull well off to the side.
The trail north of Ashwood is Cactus Trail. The trail south of Ashwood is part of Kumeyaay Valley County Park and follows the sandy bed of the San Diego River. you are welcome to explore both trails.
Kumeyaay Valley County Park trail starts by following the fence-line east then drops into the river flats. The scenery is quite untouched and wild. Cottonwood trees, prickley pear, tall grasses (watch for snakes), scattered brush and yellow primrose can be found. The hills surrounding the valley to the north, east and south make an interesting backdrop at various points along the trail.
Kumeyaay Valley County Park Trails have deep soft sand, so wear your hiking boots. Don’t forget to bring all of your art supplies. There is scattered shade along the trail. Bring plenty of water/electrolytes,a snack, a shade umbrella for your easel and sunhat. The nearest restroom is a Cactus County Park, 10610 Ashwood Street. There is also portable bathroom at the Kumeyaay Valley County Park -Archery Club, 10964 Ashwood Street, just east of the pedestrian crossing.
If you prefer to be close to restrooms, park at Cactus County Park, 10610 Ashwood Street -Lakeside near the concession stand and restrooms. NOTE: Cactus County Park does not open till 9:00AM. On the north side of the road, across from the concession stand and restroom area, is a gate to “Cactus Trail”. The trail heads north down to the dry San Diego River bed, then east, you will end up at the Ashwood Street pedestrian crossing where you will find the view of the Pillbury Ranch hay stack.
