SUMMARY:Bat Walk & Moths Under the Moonlight
DESCRIPTION:Presented by the San Diego River Park Foundation \nJoin SDRPF for a fun evening adventure to launch into bat and moth season as we listen and look for bats and moths while we stroll along the river.  We will delve into our nighttime world to eavesdrop on eerie echolocation calls using bioacoustics and attract moths to our UV lighting station to observe them up close. \nAll ages are welcome to join us for this hair-raising event. Sign up early as space is limited\, and our Nature Nights events fill up quickly! \nPlease bring a flashlight or headlamp\, a camp chair for the later mothing portion and wear long pants and close toed shoes. \n\nAbout our Presenters: \nDon Endicott is a retired civilian research engineer and executive in the field of Navy Communications and Network Technologies in San Diego\, but Don discovered a second career as a volunteer naturalist. He is a National Association of Interpretation Certified Interpretive Guide and Mission Trails Regional Park Trail Guide as well as public educator for the San Diego Natural History Museum and the San Diego Humane Society as a member of Project Wildlife’s “Bat Team”. Don presents multi-media talks on bats and mountain lions at regional venues such as Anza-Borrego Desert State Park\, Cuyamaca Rancho State Park\, Mission Trails Regional Park\, and Agua Caliente County Park. He was recognized as Anza-Borrego Desert State Park’s volunteer Naturalist of the Year in 2018. He contributes full spectrum bat echolocation call recordings to the San Diego Natural History Museum and Wildlife Acoustics\, a bioacoustics monitoring systems company\, where they have been incorporated into reference libraries for species identification. He is a field contributor to herpetofauna surveys and monitors nesting peregrine falcons for the National Park Service and US Fish & Wildlife Service. Don is co-author of 50 Best Short Hikes San Diego (Wilderness Press\, 2018) with the late Jerry Schad. \nHector Valtierra is an avid moth enthusiast\, and will be setting up a mothing station for us. When he isn’t out looking for moths and other insects\, Hector works as a microbiology and general biology professor at San Diego community colleges. SUMMARY:River Rescue Trash Cleanup
DESCRIPTION:Join the dynamic River Rescue Team\,  a group of volunteers dedicated to removing trash by the ton!  You will help remove trash and debris from the riverbed to prevent harm to water and wildlife. This event is social\, impactful\, and flexible so whether you want to focus on small plastics or getting a workout hauling large items\, there is a perfect spot for you to make an impact for the river! \nMost River Rescue volunteers are “regulars” who join us on a frequent basis\, but we welcome newcomers or volunteers curious about getting involved!  In honor of River Days\, this River Rescue will be perfect for beginners looking to learn more.  There is no long-term commitment to join this event.  At these events\, volunteers should expect to get dirty\, get a bit of a workout\, occasionally trek through terrain\, and work with an amazing group of people! \nTips:  \n\nPlease arrive at 8:45 am to get checked in. Our group will leave the meeting area roughly 5 minutes after the event starts to go to the project site.\nBe sure to dress in clothes that can get a little dirty\n\nLong pants are REQUIRED. A hat\, sunscreen\, or any other types of sun protection are also recommended for all of our outdoor events.\nClosed-toe shoes are also required. No sandals\, Tom’s or other flats. You must wear sturdy tennis or hiking shoes.\n\n\nWe will provide all tools and supplies for you to use.\nIn order to cut down on single-use plastics\, we request all volunteers bring their own reusable water bottle.\nYou may wish to bring a light snack.\nYou must be 18 years or older to participate.\nA liability waiver is required for all volunteers and will be provided at the event.\nPlease note that light rain will not cancel this event.

SUMMARY:El Monte Valley Cleanup
DESCRIPTION:Join the Allied Climbers of San Diego and The San Diego River Park Foundation as we partner to remove trash and illegal dumping from the riverbed\, recreational trails\, and roadside in El Monte Valley.  Enjoy the spectacular views of El Cajon Mountain\, have fun with fellow nature lovers and ensure a healthier river park and watershed for wildlife and the community! \nVolunteers will be staging from El Monte County Park.  This cleanup will include some work along the roadside\, and is appropriate for adults and older youth 14+.  Gloves and clean-up tools will be provided! \nGet ready to join us: \n\nClosed toe shoes and long pants are required\nPlease wear sun protection like sunscreen\, hat and sunglasses\nTo reduce our reliance on single-use plastics\, please bring your own reusable water bottle and a way to carry it during the clean-up\nWe encourage all volunteers to wear high-visibility colors. We will provide safety vests for volunteers working near the road.

SUMMARY:Wildlife Tracking Exhibit
DESCRIPTION:Join members of the San Diego Tracking Team anytime between 9 AM and 12 AM to learn how to identify the tracks of common animals in the San Diego River watershed. Examine samples of their fur and scat. Make tracks of your favorite animal in a dirt tray. Animals that inhabit our open space areas are seldom seen but their tracks make us realize they are nearby. Get a free tracking guide to take on your next hike. Learn about education and citizen science opportunities with the San Diego Tracking Team. \nAdditional Notes: \n\nDrive into the campground and park in the day-use lot to the right.  Then walk back to the campground and turn right for 100 yards to the shade structure across from the east comfort station.\nAll ages are welcome.\nRestrooms available.\nMission Trails Regional Park Kumeyaay Lake Campground (shade structure) 2 Father Junipero Serra Trail\, San Diego\, CA 92119\n\nRegistration: \nThis is a drop-in event.
