SUMMARY:Revive Our River: Restore Riparian Habitat in Mission Valley
DESCRIPTION:The San Diego River Park Foundation invites you to join us to help restore some beautiful riparian habitats in Mission Valley.  After several years of sawing down huge invasive plants\, we are finally seeing the native species start to thrive\, but they need a little help to re-establish so that they can provide benefits to the local wildlife.  Volunteers are needed\, no experience is necessary! \nJoin experienced leaders in efforts to remove non-native invasive species from the lower San Diego watershed\, adjacent to Town and Country Hotel and Fashion Valley Mall.  Volunteers will work as a team to learn about restoration efforts here\, and help to eradicate various invasive annual species\, including wild radish\, black mustard\, crown daisy\, and more. Additionally\, we will focus on our restoration area by watering new plants. As we always say\, “Many hands make light work!” \nAdditional Notes: \nWhat to expect: Many of these invasive plant species are small annuals and require either weed whacking or hand pulling\, so expect to get dirty. While there will not be specific youth-focused activities\, this event welcomes volunteers of all ages\, including chaperoned volunteers under 18\, and there will be restoration activities appropriate for younger volunteers. \nWhat to bring: \n\nPlease wear long sleeves\, long pants\, and sturdy closed-toed shoes for protection\nPlease wear a hat\, sunglasses\, and sunscreen\nAll necessary tools will be provided\, but feel free to bring your own gloves or safety glasses if preferred\nPlease bring a reusable water bottle\, so we can limit single-use plastic

SUMMARY:Hiking Tour Overlooking Ruffin Canyon
DESCRIPTION:Come learn about native plants and enjoy the expansive view overlooking Ruffin Canyon! \nThe Ruffin Canyon overlook trail hike will meet at the Taft Middle School’s Joint Use Park’s parking lot. Its driveway is on the far-right side of the school. The address is 9191 Gramercy Dr. San Diego 92123. \nThis is a very easy hike\, no rushing\, but it does require attentive hiking. We will be on a trail that runs along the outside circumference of much of Taft Middle School\, located in Serra Mesa.  The trail has great views of this wonderful lush native habitat that has survived in the heart of San Diego and contains a large variety of native species. The trail is flat\, and only about a half mile long\, but we will stop a lot to enjoy the views and talk about the native plants. At the half-way point\, the view towards Mission Valley\, where the small creek in Ruffin Canyon empties into the San Diego River\, is extra special. It is amazing that you are literally in the middle of a city of over one million people. GO NATIVE! \nEven though it is an easy hike\, it is still recommended that you wear sturdy shoes and maybe long pants. The trail is uneven in places and has steep\, descending slopes along its whole length on one side\, with lots of native plants growing along the trail. Please make sure to bring water with you and keep in mind that the school’s restrooms may not be open.
