SUMMARY:River Days Pollinator Safari & Bee-o-Blitz
DESCRIPTION:Join the California Native Bee Society and The San Diego River Park Foundation at the Point Loma Native Plant Garden to learn more about the pollinators that live in the San Diego River Watershed. We’ll look for hummingbirds\, native bees\, and bugs\, and upload our findings to iNaturalist. This demonstration garden is full of native plants and brings in some truly unique pollinators! Bring a cell phone or camera to take photos of what you find. Drop in at any time. This is a flexible event where we will be walking around slowly on dirt paths\, peering into flowers\, and can be attended by all ages. There are no bathrooms at this location.

DESCRIPTION:Please join us for an exciting evening adventure along the river as we listen and look for bats. During this guided walk\, we will learn about bat behavior and use bioacoustic equipment to monitor their echolocation calls. We will also set up a UV light to attract and observe moths and other nocturnal insects. \nREGISTER HERE \nAbout Our Presenters:\nDon Endicott is a retired Navy communications research engineer who now serves as a dedicated volunteer naturalist. He is a Certified Interpretive Guide and presents multimedia programs on bats and mountain lions at parks throughout San Diego County. Don volunteers with the San Diego Natural History Museum and Project Wildlife’s Bat Team\, contributes bat echolocation recordings for research\, and co-authored 50 Best Short Hikes San Diego (Wilderness Press\, 2018). He was named Anza-Borrego Desert State Park’s Volunteer Naturalist of the Year in 2018. \nMake it a fun evening of art and nature at Grant Park: View beautiful river-themed art at the Artist Reception for the San Diego River Artists Alliance from 5 pm – 7 pm and enjoy an art and craft activity at the River Days and Nature Nights Build a Big Brown Bat Buddy conducted by the SDRPF’s Education Team from 3 pm- 5:30 pm. Each year\, volunteers remove more than 200\,000 pounds of trash from the River—work that directly prevents pollution from reaching our ocean and beaches. \nIf you don’t mind getting a little dirty and enjoy active outdoor work\, this is a rewarding way to make a visible impact while spending time outside. \nPark + Meet:  Park in empty spots just south of Tesla Parking Station at Fashion Valley Mall. SUMMARY:Bat Walk & Moths Under the Moonlight
DESCRIPTION:Presented by the San Diego River Park Foundation \nJoin SDRPF for a fun evening adventure to launch into bat and moth season as we listen and look for bats and moths while we stroll along the river.  We will delve into our nighttime world to eavesdrop on eerie echolocation calls using bioacoustics and attract moths to our UV lighting station to observe them up close. \nAll ages are welcome to join us for this hair-raising event. Sign up early as space is limited\, and our Nature Nights events fill up quickly! \nPlease bring a flashlight or headlamp\, a camp chair for the later mothing portion and wear long pants and close toed shoes. \n\nAbout our Presenters: \nDon Endicott is a retired civilian research engineer and executive in the field of Navy Communications and Network Technologies in San Diego\, but Don discovered a second career as a volunteer naturalist. He is a National Association of Interpretation Certified Interpretive Guide and Mission Trails Regional Park Trail Guide as well as public educator for the San Diego Natural History Museum and the San Diego Humane Society as a member of Project Wildlife’s “Bat Team”. Don presents multi-media talks on bats and mountain lions at regional venues such as Anza-Borrego Desert State Park\, Cuyamaca Rancho State Park\, Mission Trails Regional Park\, and Agua Caliente County Park. He was recognized as Anza-Borrego Desert State Park’s volunteer Naturalist of the Year in 2018. He contributes full spectrum bat echolocation call recordings to the San Diego Natural History Museum and Wildlife Acoustics\, a bioacoustics monitoring systems company\, where they have been incorporated into reference libraries for species identification. He is a field contributor to herpetofauna surveys and monitors nesting peregrine falcons for the National Park Service and US Fish & Wildlife Service. Don is co-author of 50 Best Short Hikes San Diego (Wilderness Press\, 2018) with the late Jerry Schad. \nHector Valtierra is an avid moth enthusiast\, and will be setting up a mothing station for us. When he isn’t out looking for moths and other insects\, Hector works as a microbiology and general biology professor at San Diego community colleges. Help us celebrate San Diego River Days by protecting the San Diego River. Volunteers will be working on San Diego River property in Lakeside\, CA to prevent trash and debris from entering sensitive habitat. ILACSD staff will be providing volunteers with an education/safety talk and then handing out supplies for volunteers to pickup trash. Staff will be providing everything else you will need! After a short orientation and safety talk you will be sent off to remove litter around the area! Staff will sort and dispose of the collected litter and after the cleanup\, you can request community service verification on your Community Hub dashboard. \nWAIVERS: This event requires a signed release-of-liability waiver for all volunteers\, and anyone under 18 needs a waiver signed by a guardian. Please download and print the waiver below\, sign\, and bring with you to this cleanup. No printer? No problem! We will have waivers at check-in for volunteers. SUMMARY:San Diego River Mouth Habitat Restoration
DESCRIPTION:The San Diego River Mouth is home to an abundance of native resident and migratory species who depend on the threatened habitats to rest\, forage and live out their life cycles.\nJoin the San Diego Bird Alliance and SDRPF to help restore this area by removing invasive plants that reduce the integrity of viable habitat for endangered species. Members of the SDRPF Education Department will be on hand to speak about the estuary and its importance to local birds and endangered wildlife\, including the California Least Tern.\nWe will be hand pulling weeds\, removing trash and repairing any broken sections of fencing. All tools will be provided\, but bring sun protection and layers for changeable weather. \nHere are a few tips to help you prepare for the event: \n\nAttire: Long Pants and closed-toe shoes are required\nItems to Bring: Reusable water bottle\, hat\, other forms of sun protection\nWeather: Light rain will not cancel the event\nFor safety reasons\, no pets are allowed at this event\nNo experience necessary!\nFamily friendly with parental supervision!\n\nPlease note: The meeting location is NEAR the address listed.
